2Baba, Prime Suspect In Rivers DPO Murder Reportedly Killed In Joint Operation
The notorious cult leader and the prime suspect in the brutal murder of the late Divisional Police Officer, SP Bako Angbashim, in Rivers State, Gift Okpara, popularly known as 2Baba, has been reportedly killed in a joint operation by the police and other security agencies.
According to sources, 2Baba was gunned down on Saturday, February 17, 2024, during a raid on his hideout at Idu-Ekpeye community in Ahoada East local government area of Rivers State. He was said to have been hit several times by bullets, along with some of his loyalists, and his corpse was taken away by the security operatives.
2Baba was the leader of the Iceland cult group, which was responsible for many violent crimes and atrocities in the state, including the ambush and killing of the late DPO, SP Bako Angbashim, in September 2023. Angbashim, who was the DPO of Odiemudie Police Station, was captured by the cultists in the forest, where they tortured him, dismembered his body, and filmed the gruesome act.
The murder of the DPO sparked outrage and condemnation from the public and the authorities, who vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. The police declared 2Baba and his gang wanted and placed a bounty of N50 million on his head. Several raids and operations were conducted to track down and arrest the cult leader and his associates, but they proved elusive and continued to terrorize the state.
However, the breakthrough came on Saturday, when the police, in collaboration with the army, the air force, and the Department of State Services (DSS), launched a massive operation to storm the hideout of 2Baba and his gang at Idu-Ekpeye. The operation, which lasted for about two hours, involved land and aerial assaults, and resulted in a fierce gun battle between the security forces and the cultists.
The operation was said to have been successful, as 2Baba and some of his gang members were killed, while others were arrested. Several weapons, ammunition, and explosives were also recovered from the scene. The police spokesperson, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the operation and the death of 2Baba, saying that it was a major victory for the security agencies and the people of Rivers State.
The news of the death of 2Baba was greeted with jubilation and relief by the residents of Ahoada and other parts of the state, who had suffered from the reign of terror of the cult leader and his gang. Many people praised the security agencies for their bravery and professionalism and called for more efforts to rid the state of cultism and criminality.
The governor of Rivers State, Fubara Wike, also commended the security agencies for the successful operation, and described 2Baba as a menace and a threat to the peace and security of the state. He said that his administration would not tolerate any form of cultism, kidnapping, armed robbery, or any other crime in the state, and warned that anyone who engages in such acts would face the full wrath of the law.
He also condoled with the family of the late DPO, SP Bako Angbashim, and assured them that his sacrifice would not be in vain. He said that the state government would continue to support the security agencies in their efforts to ensure the safety and security of lives and property in the state. He urged the people of the state to cooperate with the security agencies and report any suspicious activities or persons to them. He also appealed to the youths of the state to shun cultism and violence, and embrace education and entrepreneurship as the keys to a better future.
